Room Tax Collection and Remittance in the State of Alaska
In the state of Alaska, only the city of Anchorage requires payment of a tax for short term accommodations. For this purpose, a short term rental is less than 30 continuous days. The tax rate is 12%.

Do I Need To Pay?
All rental activity is covered by the room tax only in the city of Anchorage. If you use Airbnb, they will collect the taxes on your behalf.

What if you obtain rentals on your own and you charge the guest directly? Then you would need to charge the guest the taxes. Also, you would need to register and submit the payments to Anchorage. These are the situations where this might occur:
- The guest is a friend.
- A guest rented your property from an ad.
- Some guests rented your property from an online site that charges only subscription fees for your listing.
- Guest rented the property from your own website.
- Guest rented the property from hosting site other than Airbnb.

How Do I Pay?
In order to pay the room tax, you need to fill out a tax return for all your properties rented. The form and payment is sent to the municipal tax office address that is printed on the return.

Only Anchorage requires payment of the room tax. They also require that you register as a business entity to facilitate payments.
